ALOHA!!!

Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science has been selected as one of the five schools in the State of Hawaii to participate in the 2016 Summer College Tour to the East Coast of the United States of America!  This year the students and chaperones visit the Washington DC area.

five Schools were selected from the State, and each school is allowed to bring five students and one chaperone!  I, Jo-Lyn Mehau - High School Counselor, am blessed to be accompanying the HAAS students to Washington DC.

We will be joined by Kealakehe High School (West Big Island), Leilehua High School (Oahu), and Kailua High School (Oahu).

The process to select students wasn't an easy one, a large number of students wanted to attend the trip but only five are allowed.  HAAS decided to have students write a personal essay answering the following four questions: why you would like to go on this trip, why we should pick you, what you feel you will gain from the experience, and how you can give back to the community.  I received 16 personal statements and eight students were then chosen to be interviewed for the five spots.  In the interview we wanted to know if the student had been to Washington DC before, how the student would represent HAAS and charter schools on a national stage, and to elaborate on the giving back aspect of their personal statements.  All of the HAAS students interviewed were amazing and the decision was not an easy one.  The following five students were selected and will post a blog describing themselves and how they feel about being chosen for the trip!

Stella Javier - c/o 2017

Rayna Robinson - c/o 2017

Nainoa Enriquez - c/o 2018

Zanira Musa - c/o 2018

Kiana Ozbolt - c/o 2019

Along the journey each student will be responsible for five blogs documenting our journey.  Two blogs will be of a school of their choosing (students will pick before the trip so that all schools are covered) and three blogs will consist of an event or activity we will be partaking in.  The students have a guideline to follow for the schools and for the activities that includes pictures/videos, information, and a reflection.  The students will be posting while on the trip and then completing their blogs in full before the end of summer.

Welcome to our Blog and ENJOY!
